Dr. Erica Bove

fertility specialist & fertility coach

Hi! I’m Dr. Erica Bove

From my experience of taking care of patients, including a high number of female physicians, I noticed that the journey of these extraordinary women had many layers of complexity.

Love & Science addresses that. I offer empathetic, evidence-based care as you undergo your fertility workup and treatments.

By incorporating coaching principles into my care, I am able to shine light on my clients’ thoughts and feelings, helping them move beyond limited beliefs.

It’s time to feel hopeful, calm, and loved.

I am here to support you and I believe in you.

MY STORY

“An infertility specialist told me I would have a hard time conceiving.”

When I was in my third year of medical school, an infertility specialist told me I would have a hard time conceiving. I had been a competitive runner in my previous life, and my menstrual function seemed erratic at best. I had gone to medical school to become a psychiatrist, ideally to rid the world of eating disorders, however with this news about my own body, combined with how I felt on my OBGYN rotation made me switch courses and pursue a career in women’s medicine.

I fell in love with meaningful work. I love helping women and couples take control of their reproductive health.

As I took care of more and more patients, including a high number of female physicians (As we now know, 1 in 4 female physicians experiences infertility), I noticed that the experience of these extraordinary women had many layers of complexity. I found that many of my patients also had an especially hard time switching from the role of doctor to patient. With such high stakes as family building, the “doctor brain” became an incessant ruminating voice, wondering if results and outcomes were normal, and also worrying that it was their responsibility to ensure nothing was missed in their care.

Many of my patients experienced shame and regret for not trying to start their families sooner. In short, it was virtually impossible for them to leave fertility treatment with their mental health intact, even when the fertility treatments had been “successful”.

I started to figure out ways to better support them. First and foremost, I knew deeply that the start of this journey requires a trusting relationship. I took great care to get to know my patients in a way which would help me to help them navigate the ups and downs of the journey.  I started to embrace my role as an expert in my field, and took great care to make the nuances accessible to my patients. I started to break things down into smaller and more clear parts, developing a system of “milestones”, and looking at both the details and the big picture at the same time. I started to look for reasons for authentic hope– reasons my patients might have factors related to a good prognosis. I started to tap into my own intuition and help my patients do the same, to make the best decisions for them based on their values and inner knowing. And lastly, I incorporated coaching principles into my care, with permission shining a light on my patients’ thoughts and feelings, and moving beyond limited beliefs. I firmly believe that people who want to become parents will become parents. And they become excellent parents, especially since they have wanted this so deeply.

My role is to humbly guide, serve and support, to make this dream a reality for all of my patients and clients.

Let me guide, serve, and support you too.
